The Japanese program
Mortlake College is a government school, situated in rural Victoria. As a P-12 College, all year levels from Prep to Year 12 can be found on the one campus.
In 2013, all students from Year 1 to 7 will study Japanese. While students at these levels develop basic skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing, the focus of the program is on enjoying and fostering an interest in Japanese language. In the early years, there are lots of songs, games and physical activities to foster language development while students in upper primary years also use ICT and interactive activities to both learn and demonstrate their language skills.
From Year 8 and above, students elect to study Japanese. This is the first time that Japanese has been offered to older students. With a very generous time allocation of 5 x 50 minutes per week, students will have the opportunity to develop skills in all areas, including reading and writing in character. The Japanese program is very fortunate to have a class set of iPads and we are looking forward to utilising this wonderful resource in all classes.
Although Japanese is a relatively new program, four students from Mortlake College had the opportunity to test their knowledge of Japan and their language skills during a tour to Japan in 2012. This tour was organised in conjunction with Derrinallum P-12 College and was an outstanding success. It is hoped that the tour will become part of the biennial school calendar.
