Our Sister School
Makigahara Elementary School, Yokohama
Our sister school is Makigahara Elementary School in Yokohama. Yokohama is the second biggest city in Japan with a population of over three million. Yokohama is located less than half an hour south of Tokyo by train, and is the capital of Kanagawa Prefecture.
There are 300 students at Makigahara Elementary School from Year 1 (6 or 7 years old) through to Year 6 (11 or 12 years old). Each year level has around 50 students divided into 2 classes.
The school year in Japan starts from April to March and there are three vacations in the year,
* Summer vacation: from the middle of July to the end of August
* Winter vacation: from the end of December to the beginning of January
* Spring vacation: from the end of March to the beginning of April (which is the beginning of the new school year)
School is held from Monday to Friday, and there may be a few days off in a month apart from Saturday and Sunday.
English class is held once in a week in each grade. Normally, a homeroom teacher teaches English and there is an AET (Assistant English Teacher) whose mother language is English, or a volunteer, who is Japanese and can speak English.
We are looking forward to developing our relationship with Makigahara Elementary School and learning more about the school and life in Japan.
