Kodomo no hi (Children’s day) is a Japanese festival held every May the 5th since 1948. It is a day for parents to celebrate the healthy growth of their children and for children it is a public holiday. Parents hang koinobori carp banners for every child in the house and samurai figurines to symbolize bravery and strength. Families will often take a bath sprinkled with iris leaves and roots. Over the years, the carp banners have gotten smaller as most Japanese apartments are now smaller as well.
